"Hunger Games" Chocolate Collection by Chocolatier Vosges

A new line of chocolates has been released by upscale chocolatier Vosges Haut-Chocolat with names and flavors inspired by the characters and districts from the movie, "Hunger Games: Catching Fire."

A series of 12 chocolate bars inspired by the twelve Districts of  Panem is being distributed in grocery stores under the company's grocery brand, Wild Ophelia.  Each of the bars contains ingredients that represent the specialty/industry for which each corresponding district is known; for example, the bar inspired by District 10 (which specializes in Livestock production) includes bits of beef jerky and the essence/aroma/flavor of smoked mesquite.  The chocolate bars can be purchased as singles ($4.99 each) or in a collector's box--The Hunger Games Chocolate Bar Library--that contains one each of the twelve bars ($65).  The following are the available varieties:

• DISTRICT 12 - Mining: mined salt + 41% cacao milk chocolate 
• DISTRICT 11 - Agriculture: harvest cherry + 70% cacao dark chocolate 
• DISTRICT 10 - Livestock: beef jerky + smoked mesquite + 41% cacao milk chocolate 
• DISTRICT 9 - Grain: milled oats + vanilla hemp seeds + 70% cacao dark chocolate 
• DISTRICT 8 - Textiles: caramelized crispy rice +70% cacao dark chocolate 
• DISTRICT 7 - Lumber: smoked chipotle chili + 41% cacao milk chocolate 
• DISTRICT 6 - Transportation: crunchy runner peanuts in peanut butter + 41% cacao milk chocolate 
• DISTRICT 5 - Power: crispy crunchy caramel corn +70% cacao dark chocolate 
• DISTRICT 4 - Fishing: sea salt + coconut + 70% cacao dark chocolate
• DISTRICT 3 - Technology: arabica coffee + crystal salt + 70% cacao dark chocolate 
• DISTRICT 2 - Masonry: caramel + pecan + 41% cacao milk chocolate

An additional series of three chocolate bars named after and inspired by "Hunger Games" characters Katniss, Effie, and President Snow are being distributed on the Vosges website ($7.50 per bar).  The Katniss chocolate bar combines hickory smoked bacon, apples and alderwood smoked sea salt with milk chocolate, while the Effie bar is a mixture of dried strawberries, candied violet flowers and 62% cacao dark chocolate.  The President Snow bar contains blood orange, tellicherry peppercorns, caramel, and 72% cacao dark chocolate.

Vosges' website also features two collections of truffles inspired by the movie.  The Hunger Games Truffle Collection ($45.00) contains 16 pieces total of the following flavors:

• Evergreen: rosemary + pink peppercorn + white chocolate 
• Litchi: jasmine + lychee + dark chocolate + jasmine tea powder 
• Juglans: candied walnut + milk chocolate 
• Tulsi: huckleberry gelée + holy basil milk chocolate ganache + dark chocolate 
• Vervain: lemon verbena + bitter orange + dark chocolate 
• Flora: peach + orange flower + white chocolate + crushed candied violets 
• Tamarindus: chillies + tamarind + dark chocolate + salted mango powder

The Capitol Truffle Collection ($225.00) is more than a box of 36 chocolates; it is a complete degustation system.  The top tray holds two each of 18 different truffle flavors, while the bottom tray comes filled with exotic and organic ingredients such as vials of crushed violet petals, pearl dust, gold leaf and matcha tea, and detailed mixology instructions to create decadent libations that complement the chocolates.  The box also provides "social etiquette" instructions and the accoutrement to observe these traditions; the product description is unclear about whether these ceremonies are also inspired by the "Hunger Games" stories.  This exclusive collection appears to include the flavors of the 16-piece collection plus some new ones such as a truffle which combines coconut and banana with dark chocolate and a topping of  coconut charcoal ash.
